Five Areas of Learning
The Montessori curriculum is organised into five interconnected areas, each carefully designed to meet the natural developmental needs of the child. Together, they nurture the whole child — intellectually, physically, socially, and creatively.
Practical Life
Practical Life activities encompass care of self, care of the environment, grace and courtesy, and control of movement — giving children the tools to act purposefully and independently in their everyday world. Through tasks such as pouring, buttoning, sweeping, and flower arranging, children develop deep concentration, fine motor precision, and a profound sense of order and belonging.

Sensorial

Mathematics

4 Core Principles of Montessori
The Prepared Environment
Every element of the Planet of the Free Child classroom is deliberately arranged to invite exploration and support independence. Materials are presented in a logical sequence on accessible, low shelves, allowing children to choose their own work and return it with care — building agency and responsibility alongside academic skills.
The Uninterrupted Work Cycle
Children benefit from a three-hour uninterrupted work cycle each morning — a cornerstone of authentic Montessori practice. This extended period allows deep concentration to develop naturally, enabling children to enter a state of focused absorption known as 'normalisation', which Dr. Montessori identified as the hallmark of healthy development.
Mixed-Age Groupings
Our classrooms bring together children across a three-year age span, mirroring the natural social structure of families and communities. Younger children learn by observing older peers, while older children deepen their own understanding through teaching — fostering empathy, leadership, and a collaborative community spirit.
Auto-Education
Montessori believed that children possess within themselves an innate drive to learn. Our role is not to fill an empty vessel, but to prepare an environment rich enough to spark that inner teacher. Materials are self-correcting, so children receive immediate, non-judgmental feedback and develop the resilience to try again independently.
The Montessori Method in Practice
Learning at Planet of the Free Child is never passive. Our educators act as guides, carefully observing each child and introducing new challenges at precisely the right moment — honouring every child's individual pace and learning style.
Observation
Before any lesson is given, the Montessori guide observes each child closely — noting interests, readiness signals, and concentration patterns. This careful observation ensures that every presentation is offered at the ideal developmental window, making learning feel natural and effortless rather than forced.
Presentation
The guide introduces a new material or concept through a precise, minimal three-period lesson. Movements are slow and deliberate, language is simple and purposeful, and the focus remains entirely on the material — inviting the child's curiosity without overwhelming it with unnecessary words or explanation.
Independent Practice
After the presentation, the child freely chooses to work with the material as many times as they wish, at their own pace and on their own terms. Repetition is honoured as a sign of deep concentration, not boredom — it is through this self-directed repetition that true mastery is built from within.
Mastery
Mastery is demonstrated not by a test, but by the child's calm, confident, and purposeful engagement with the material. The guide observes this readiness and records the achievement, then gently withdraws to allow consolidation before introducing the next extension in the sequence.
Extension
Once mastery is achieved, the guide presents an extension activity that introduces greater complexity, abstraction, or a new application of the concept. Extensions keep the child in a state of productive challenge — neither bored by work that is too easy nor anxious about work that is too hard.

What a Day Looks Like
Every day at Planet of the Free Child follows a warm, predictable rhythm that gives children a sense of security and belonging. Within this gentle structure, each child's day unfolds uniquely — guided by their own curiosity, energy, and readiness.
Our Daily Schedule
- 8:00 – 8:30 AMMorning Arrival & Welcome
Children arrive and are greeted individually by their guide. Morning routines such as hanging up bags, signing in at the attendance board, and choosing their first work of the day help children transition smoothly into the school environment and build a sense of ownership over their space.
- 8:00 – 11:00 AMUninterrupted Work Cycle
The heart of the Montessori morning: a three-hour period of child-directed activity. Children move freely through the prepared environment, selecting materials from the five curriculum areas, working individually or in small groups, and engaging in lessons offered by the guide. Concentration deepens, and the classroom hums with purposeful, peaceful activity.
- 11:00 – 11:45 AMOutdoor Exploration & Gross Motor Play
Children move to the outdoor environment for fresh air, physical exercise, and nature-based exploration. The outdoor space is an extension of the classroom — children may tend the garden, observe insects, participate in group games, or engage in imaginative play, all of which support physical development, risk assessment, and social negotiation skills.
- 11:45 AM – 12:30 PMLunch & Community Mealtime
Lunch is a social and practical life experience. Children set their own places, serve themselves where appropriate, practise mealtime conversation, and learn table manners within a warm, unhurried atmosphere. Cleaning up after eating reinforces responsibility and care for the shared environment.
- 12:30 – 1:30 PMRest, Story & Quiet Work
Younger children rest in a cosy, darkened sleep area, while older children engage in quiet work, guided reading, journaling, or sensorial activities. Story time and music weave through this period, nurturing a love of literature, language, and calm self-regulation before the afternoon.
- 12:30 – 1:00 PMAfternoon Enrichment & Dismissal
The afternoon is enriched with art, music, movement, cultural projects, and language sessions. Children reflect on their day, tidy their materials, and prepare for dismissal. Guides share brief observations with families at pick-up, keeping parents connected to their child's daily journey and achievements.
